It's been a while since your last checkup. Maybe you notice a little bleeding when you floss, or a rough spot behind your lower front teeth that your toothbrush never seems to reach. Maybe nothing feels wrong at all, and you just know you're overdue. These are the moments a professional dental cleaning is built for. At Boulder Rock Dental in Palm Coast, routine cleanings are the foundation of the care we provide to patients of every age.
A dental cleaning is a preventive visit in which our dental hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth, both above and just below the gumline. Plaque is a soft, sticky film that forms on teeth every day. When it isn't fully removed, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus), which brushing and flossing at home can't take off. Our hygienist uses professional instruments to clear those deposits, then polishes the teeth to smooth the surfaces.
Cleanings help nearly everyone. We see patients from young children to seniors, so the same appointment type serves a child getting comfortable in the dental chair, a working adult keeping up with routine care, and an older patient maintaining natural teeth or restorations. The cleaning is usually paired with a dental exam, so our dentists can check for cavities, gum concerns, and other changes while your teeth are freshly cleaned and easy to evaluate.
If you're new to our office or returning after a long gap, your first visit starts with getting to know your mouth as it is today. We review your health history, talk through any concerns, and look closely at your teeth and gums. That baseline helps us decide what kind of cleaning makes sense for you, because not every mouth needs the same approach.
For most patients, a standard preventive cleaning is the right fit. Some situations call for a different plan, and it helps to know that going in:
- Children may also benefit from fluoride treatment or dental sealants, and parents are welcome in the treatment room.
- Patients with signs of gum disease may need scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning that addresses tartar below the gumline.
- Patients with a history of gum treatment often move to periodontal maintenance visits instead of standard cleanings.
- Adults with dentures, implants, or other restorations need care tailored to the work already in their mouths.
If we find that a standard cleaning isn't enough, we'll explain what we see and why before recommending anything else. You'll know your options before any additional treatment begins.
Cleanings as Part of Your Overall Dental Care
A cleaning appointment is also an opportunity for us to catch problems early. While your teeth are clean, our dentists can use cavity detection to look for areas of decay, and we can perform an oral cancer screening as part of a thorough checkup. Finding a small issue during a routine visit is usually far simpler than addressing it after it has caused pain.
When we do find something, we can often take care of it right here. Our office provides fillings, crowns, gum disease treatment, root canal therapy, and other restorative care, so a concern discovered at your cleaning doesn't mean starting over somewhere new. Dr. Thinh Tran and Dr. Jake Ryan lead our team with an emphasis on patient comfort and modern technology, and that carries through every part of the visit.
Aftercare and Keeping Results Between Visits
After a cleaning, your teeth typically feel noticeably smoother. If your gums were inflamed beforehand, they may feel a little tender for a short time. Gentle brushing and regular flossing help your gums settle and keep plaque from building back up. If anything feels unusual afterward, call us and we'll talk it through.
The results of a cleaning last only as long as the habits that follow it. Plaque begins forming again right away, which is why consistent home care and regular return visits matter so much. At each appointment, our hygienist can point out areas that need extra attention, such as hard-to-reach back teeth or spots around existing dental work, and show you ways to clean them more effectively. We'll recommend a return schedule based on what we see in your mouth.
Insurance, Payment, and Membership Options
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and many plans cover preventive visits like cleanings. Our team can help you understand how your benefits apply. We also welcome self-pay patients.
For patients without insurance, our in-house dental membership plans offer a straightforward way to stay on track with preventive care. Plans are available at $189 or $240 per year, with a $109 annual option for veterans. If your cleaning leads to additional treatment, we offer financing through CareCredit, iCreditWorks, and Sunbit to help spread out the cost.
Whether you live in Palm Coast, Flagler Beach, Beverly Beach, or Painters Hill, we'd be glad to see you. If you're due or overdue for a cleaning, call our office to schedule your visit. We'll take it from there.
