Maybe it's been a few years since you sat in a dental chair, or you've noticed a twinge when you bite down and can't tell whether it matters. Maybe you just moved to Palm Coast and need a new dental home for your family. Whatever brought you here, a dental exam is the simplest way to get clear answers. At Boulder Rock Dental, we use each exam to understand what's happening in your mouth now and to help you plan sensibly for what comes next.

A dental exam is a careful, hands-on evaluation of your teeth, gums, and mouth by one of our dentists, Dr. Thinh Tran or Dr. Jake Ryan. We look for signs of decay through cavity detection, check the health of your gums, review existing fillings, crowns, or other dental work, and perform an oral cancer screening. The goal is to find small concerns while they're still small and to give you an honest picture of your overall oral health.

Exams help nearly everyone. We see patients of all ages, from children to seniors, so the same visit can mean very different things depending on who's in the chair. For a young child, we may focus on how teeth are coming in and whether preventive steps like sealants or fluoride make sense. For an adult, we may look closely at gum health or a tooth that feels sensitive. For an older patient, we may check how well dentures or a bridge are fitting. Parents are welcome in the treatment room during their child's visit.

You don't need to prepare anything special before your first exam. It helps to bring a list of any medications you take and to mention any changes in your health. If something has been bothering you, such as sensitivity to cold, bleeding when you floss, a chipped tooth, or a sore spot that won't heal, tell us at the start so we can pay close attention to it.

If you're anxious or it's been a long time since your last visit, you're in good company. Our team puts a strong emphasis on comfort, and we'll explain what we're looking at as we go. There's no lecture about the past. We start from where you are today. Many patients pair their exam with a dental cleaning from our hygienist, which makes the visit an efficient way to cover both checkup and care in one trip. If you're in pain right now, don't wait for a routine visit. We offer emergency dental appointments and can evaluate the problem promptly.

After Your Exam: Results and Next Steps

Once your exam is complete, we sit down and walk you through what we found in plain language. Often the news is simply that things look healthy, and we'll recommend a schedule for your next checkup. If we do spot something, we'll explain your options and why we're suggesting them. Because we offer a wide range of care under one roof, your next step can usually happen right here. That might be:

  • A filling or composite bonding for an early cavity
  • Scaling and root planing or periodontal maintenance for gum concerns
  • Crowns, root canal therapy, or bridges for teeth that need more support
  • Clear aligners such as Invisalign if alignment is affecting your bite or confidence

Aftercare following a routine exam is simple: keep brushing and flossing, and follow any specific home-care tips we give you. If we've recommended treatment, we'll help you prioritize what's urgent and what can be planned over time. Regular exams let us compare your mouth from visit to visit, which makes it easier to notice gradual changes that would be easy to miss otherwise.

Insurance, Self-Pay, and Financing Options

We want cost to be a clear, predictable part of your care, not a reason to put it off. We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we're glad to help you understand how your benefits apply to exams and any follow-up treatment. If you don't have insurance, we welcome self-pay patients.

For patients without coverage, our in-house dental membership plans offer another option, with annual plans at $189 and $240, plus a $109 per year plan for veterans. Our team can explain what each plan covers so you can choose the right fit. If you need treatment after your exam, we also offer financing through CareCredit, iCreditWorks, and Sunbit, which can make larger care easier to manage over time.
