Peace of Mind

You leave knowing a trusted dentist has looked carefully at your oral health.

Most of us notice a sore spot in our mouth now and then and assume it will go away on its own. Usually it does. But some changes in the tissues of the mouth, tongue, lips, and throat don't announce themselves with pain, and they're easy to overlook in a bathroom mirror. That's why we build oral cancer screening into our dental care at Boulder Rock Dental. It's a careful look at areas you can't easily see yourself, done by a dentist who knows what healthy tissue should look like.

An oral cancer screening is a visual and hands-on examination of the soft tissues in and around your mouth. During the screening, we look at your lips, gums, cheek linings, the top and underside of your tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat. We also gently feel along your jaw and neck. We're checking for anything unusual, such as color changes, rough or thickened patches, lumps, or sores that haven't healed.

Screening helps patients of every age, and we see everyone from children to seniors in our Palm Coast office. Adults benefit most because the risk of oral cancer generally rises with age. But anyone who has noticed a persistent change in their mouth should have it checked, whatever their age. Because our office includes oral medicine among our capabilities, we can perform screenings and, when appropriate, biopsies. That means a closer look doesn't automatically require starting over somewhere new.

You don't need to prepare anything special for a screening. It takes only a few minutes and is often part of a routine dental exam. It's quick, noninvasive, and shouldn't hurt. If you wear dentures or a partial, we'll ask you to remove them so we can see the tissue underneath. That's an area that sometimes gets missed.

It helps to tell us about anything you've noticed, even if it seems minor. Concrete details are useful, such as:

  • A sore, ulcer, or irritated spot that has lasted more than a couple of weeks
  • White or red patches on the gums, tongue, or cheeks
  • A lump, thickening, or rough area you can feel with your tongue
  • Ongoing hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or a feeling that something is caught in your throat
  • Numbness or tenderness in the mouth or lips without a clear cause

Share your health history and habits openly too, including tobacco and alcohol use. We aren't asking in order to judge. These details simply help us understand your situation and decide how closely to follow any findings.

Understanding Your Results and What Comes Next

Most screenings end with good news: everything looks healthy, and we'll check again at your next visit. There's no recovery period and no aftercare involved. You can return to eating, working, or anything else right away. Between visits, keep an eye on your mouth when you brush and floss, and let us know if something new appears instead of waiting for your next appointment.

Sometimes we find an area we want to watch. Many changes in the mouth turn out to be harmless, such as irritation from a sharp tooth edge, a cheek bite, or a denture that no longer fits well. In those cases, we may address the likely cause and ask you to come back in a short time so we can see whether the spot has resolved. If something calls for a closer look, we'll explain what we saw in plain language and talk through next steps, which may include a biopsy. Our goal is to give you clear information and make sure nothing is left unanswered.

Making Screening Part of Your Regular Care

Screening works best as an ongoing habit, not a one-time event. Regular visits give us a point of comparison, so a change from one appointment to the next stands out more clearly. That continuity is one reason we encourage families from Palm Coast, Flagler Beach, Beverly Beach, and Painters Hill to keep up with routine cleanings and exams. Those visits are also natural opportunities for screening.

Cost shouldn't stand in the way of that consistency. We accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay patients. For patients without insurance, our in-house dental membership plans are $189 or $240 per year, with a $109 option for veterans. We also offer financing through CareCredit, iCreditWorks, and Sunbit for any additional care you may need. Our front desk team can walk you through your options before treatment so you know where you stand.

Schedule Your Screening With Us

Dr. Thinh Tran, Dr. Jake Ryan, and our team want your visits to feel comfortable and unhurried, and we're glad to answer questions along the way. If it has been a while since your last exam, or if you've noticed something in your mouth that hasn't gone away, now is a good time to come in. Call our office or request an appointment, and we'll make time to take a careful look and give you peace of mind.
