A single missing tooth rarely stays a single problem. When a gap opens up, the teeth on either side can slowly drift or tip toward the empty space. The opposing tooth above or below may shift out of position, and chewing on that side can start to feel uneven. A dental bridge fills that space with a natural-looking replacement tooth anchored to the teeth beside it. At Boulder Rock Dental in Palm Coast, Dr. Thinh Tran and Dr. Jake Ryan place bridges as part of our restorative care for neighbors throughout Flagler Beach, Beverly Beach, Painters Hill, and the surrounding area.

A traditional bridge is made of connected pieces that work together as one unit. The replacement tooth, called a pontic, sits in the gap where your natural tooth used to be. On each side, a crown fits over a neighboring tooth, known as an abutment tooth. Those crowns hold the pontic securely in place, and the entire restoration is cemented. Unlike a partial denture, it isn't something you take out at night.

Bridges help people in a wide range of situations. One patient may have lost a back molar to decay years ago and has been chewing on the other side ever since. Another may have needed a tooth extracted after a crack that couldn't be saved. Someone else may simply want to close a visible gap that makes them hesitant to smile. Because we also provide crowns, dental implants, and both complete and partial dentures, we can walk you through how a bridge compares to other options.

A good bridge depends on strong support. The teeth on either side of the gap need to be healthy enough to carry crowns, and the gums and bone around them need to be in good shape. During your exam, we look closely at those neighboring teeth, check for decay or old fillings, and evaluate your gum health. If we find gum disease, we can treat it first with options such as scaling and root planing so your bridge has a stable foundation.

It's also worth understanding the trade-off. To fit the crowns, we reshape the abutment teeth, and that change is permanent. If those teeth already have large fillings or could benefit from crowns anyway, a bridge can make a lot of sense. If they're untouched and healthy, a dental implant may be worth considering, since it replaces the tooth without altering its neighbors. For several missing teeth, a partial denture is another possibility. We'll lay out the options honestly so you can choose what fits your mouth, your goals, and your budget.

Caring for Your Bridge Day to Day

A bridge is cared for much like natural teeth, with one important addition: keeping the area underneath the pontic clean. Food and plaque can collect in that space, and the abutment teeth beneath the crowns can still develop decay or gum problems if they're neglected. A few simple habits go a long way:

  • Brush twice a day, paying close attention to where the crowns meet the gumline.
  • Clean under the pontic daily with a floss threader, special bridge floss, or a water flosser.
  • Keep up with regular dental cleanings and exams so we can check the bridge and supporting teeth.
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or non-food items that could chip or loosen the restoration.

With consistent care, a bridge can restore comfortable chewing and fill out your smile so the gap is no longer noticeable. At your routine visits, our hygienist and dentists check the fit, margins, and surrounding gums, so small issues are caught early. If your bridge ever feels loose, cracks, or causes discomfort, call us. We offer emergency dental appointments and will work to see you promptly.

Paying for Your Bridge

We accept all major PPO insurance plans. Bridges are a restorative treatment, so many plans include some coverage. Our team will help you understand your benefits before treatment begins so there are no surprises. We also welcome self-pay patients and are happy to review your treatment cost with you up front.

If you'd like to spread out payments, we work with CareCredit, iCreditWorks, and Sunbit. For patients without insurance, our in-house dental membership plans are another option, offered at $189, $240, and $109 for veterans per year. We can explain what each plan includes and help you decide whether one makes sense for your situation.

Let's Talk About Your Smile

If you've been living with a gap, or you've recently lost a tooth and aren't sure what comes next, a conversation is the best place to start. We'll examine the area, answer your questions, and explain whether a bridge, an implant, or another approach is the right fit. We put patient comfort first and use modern technology to make each visit as smooth as possible.

Dr. Tran, Dr. Ryan, and our whole team look forward to welcoming you to our Palm Coast office. Call us today to schedule your visit, and let's work together on a plan that helps you chew comfortably and smile with confidence again.
