Crowns in Flagler Beach

Crowns in Flagler Beach

If a tooth has cracked, broken down around an old filling, or simply doesn't feel strong enough to trust when you bite, a dental crown may be the most practical way to protect it. At Boulder Rock Dental, Dr. Thinh Tran and Dr. Jake Ryan place crowns for patients of all ages, and many of the people we see make the short trip to our Palm Coast office from Flagler Beach. Below, we explain when a crown makes sense, how we place one, and how to care for it.

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline. Instead of patching one area, as a filling does, it surrounds the tooth and holds it together. That full coverage restores the tooth's shape and lets it handle everyday chewing again.

Crowns are one of the core treatments in our restorative dentistry care. They also connect to much of the other work we do, including bridges, dental implants, and full mouth reconstruction. When a Flagler Beach patient comes to us with a damaged tooth, we look at the whole picture before recommending a crown, so the treatment fits your mouth and your goals.

Patients usually come to us for a crown for one of several reasons. One of the most common is a cracked tooth. Our office treats cracked teeth, and a crown can hold the remaining structure together so the crack is less likely to spread. Another is a tooth with a large or failing filling. When there isn't enough healthy tooth left to support another filling, a crown is often the sturdier choice.

Crowns also play a role after root canal therapy. A tooth that has had a root canal can become more fragile, and a crown helps protect it going forward. Because we perform root canal therapy and root canal retreatments in our own office, Flagler Beach patients can often have both steps handled by the same team. Crowns are also used to top a dental implant or to anchor a bridge, and they sometimes help improve the look of a misshapen or discolored tooth as part of our cosmetic dentistry. Some of the reasons a crown may help:

  • Protecting a cracked or weakened tooth
  • Replacing a large, worn, or broken filling
  • Strengthening a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Restoring a dental implant or supporting a bridge
  • Improving the shape or appearance of a tooth

What the Crown Process Involves

Every crown starts with a dental exam. We check the tooth, the surrounding gums, and your bite to confirm that a crown is the right option. If decay or an infection needs attention first, we take care of that before moving forward. If a tooth is too damaged to save, we'll talk with you openly about other options, such as an implant, a bridge, or dentures.

Once a crown is the plan, we gently shape the tooth to make room for it and take impressions so the crown can be made to fit. You'll usually leave with a temporary crown that protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. At a follow-up visit, we remove the temporary, check the fit and bite of the final crown, and bond it in place. We focus on keeping you comfortable throughout. If you're dealing with sudden pain or a broken tooth, we offer emergency dental appointments, including same-day emergency visits, so you don't have to wait in discomfort.

Caring for Your Crown

A crown covers your tooth, but the tooth underneath and the gums around it still need daily care. Brush twice a day and floss carefully around the crown, especially where it meets the gumline. While you have a temporary crown, avoid sticky or very hard foods and chew on the other side when you can.

Regular dental cleanings and exams let our hygienist and dentists keep an eye on your crown and the tooth beneath it. If you notice soreness, a change in your bite, or a crown that feels loose, call our office. Patients from Flagler Beach often schedule these routine visits alongside other family appointments, since we see children through seniors.

Paying for Your Crown

We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we welcome self-pay patients. Our team can help you understand your coverage before treatment begins so you know what to expect.

For patients who prefer to spread out costs, we offer financing through CareCredit, iCreditWorks, and Sunbit. We also offer in-house dental membership plans priced at $189, $240, and $109 per year for veterans. If you're in Flagler Beach and have a tooth that needs attention, contact Boulder Rock Dental to schedule an exam. We'll help you decide whether a crown is the right next step.
